THE POWER OF WISDOM

KEY VERSE: “There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise” (Proverbs 30:24).

TEXT: PROVERBS 30:21-33

There is a famous African folktale about an animal that claimed to have mopped up all the wisdom in the world into a pouch and attempted to hide it on a palm tree where no one else could reach it. Unfortunately, it placed the pouch on its chest and repeatedly failed to climb the tree until an onlooker advised it to put the pouch on its back. It dawned on the crafty animal that, indeed, it had been unable to capture all the wisdom in the world and, therefore, abandoned its mission.

There are lessons to learn from our passage in the light of this fable. First, wisdom is paramount in human affairs and applicable to specific situations. It also enables the weak to turn their disability into strength. It is described as “the principal thing”, which (coupled with understanding) should be sought by everyone. The little animals mentioned in our passage illustrate the application of wisdom to the challenges of life: the ants make adequate provision for the winter of scarcity; conies are weak but build safe houses that are inaccessible to predators; locusts, without a single leader, demonstrate strength in collective action, by organising themselves in incredible, irresistible swarms, and the powerless spider sneaks into highly secured places where strong human beings find difficult to enter.

Second, different forms of wisdom apply to different situations in life, as shown by the different animals in the Bible passage. Third, no single person has a monopoly of wisdom, and true wisdom is from God. We must seek it from Him with unwavering faith. Finally, wisdom is most profitable if correctly applied to pleasing God. Sinners should be wise unto salvation by repenting and trusting the Lord for mercy and forgiveness.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The wisdom from above is above worldly wisdom.

JESUS SETS FREE

MEMORY VERSE: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

READ:JOHN 8:30-36

Our text underscores the significance of freedom in the life of any man. A man who is denied of freedom is basically unable to engage in certain things. Roger R. Nicole, author and theologian, defines freedom as, “The ability to fulfill one’s destiny, to function in terms of one’s ultimate goal.” Freedom when gotten, brings happiness, sense of worth, creativity, ease of doing things, etc. Jesus is the only source of true freedom.

Sin brings a youth into bondage and eternal destruction. The mastermind behind sin is Satan. Sin is the root cause of sexual perversion, youthful lust, sickness, mental and spiritual slavery, and drug addiction. You can be free from sin and all kinds of slavery through the sacrifice of Jesus, the Son of God. Christ has the power to break every chain of sin. All you need to do is to acknowledge that you need freedom. Accept the sacrifice of Christ for your freedom. Walk and live in the reality of the freedom in Christ through obedience to His word.

QUOTE: Acknowledge that you need freedom.

PRAYER: Lord, set me free from sin and all kinds of slavery.

CHALLENGE: Repentance from sin brings true freedom.

IF YOU WANT IT, GIVE IT

KEY VERSE: “And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.” Luke 6:31

TEXT: LUKE 6:27-31

Everyone likes to receive gifts but not many like to give. The Bible says it is more blessed to give than to receive; so the habit of giving to others must be embraced by every child of God. God showed us the examples of giving when He gave His only begotten Son to die for our sins (John 3:16). He expects us also to give to the needy around us.

The story was told of an old missionary woman who was told of a suffering family which hadn't had much to eat and was starving. Many people in their community were in the same condition. This missionary visited the family and gave them a bag of rice. As soon as it was received, the mother in the family divided the bag into two and went out. The missionary was left wondering where she went. She returned shortly thereafter and the missionary asked where she went. She explained that her neighbours were also hungry, so she took some of the rice to them. The missionary was surprised and happy that the woman thought about others in the situation that she was. She commended her for her thoughtfulness and kindness.

The Bible says when we look at the needs of others and meet them, God will make sure our own needs are also met. So, if you want it, give it! Giving is the key to blessing because givers never lack. Nothing is too small to give, but do it cheerfully and God will reward you abundantly.

PRAYER: God, please, give me the heart of giving to meet the needs of other people.
