THE PERIL OF SELF-INDULGENCE
KEY VERSE: “Give not thy strength unto women, nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings” (Proverbs 31:3).
TEXT: PROVERBS 31:1-9
Strong winds can bring down mighty and ancient trees when rot and termites have eaten them on the inside. Outwardly, the trees may appear strong and firmly rooted, but they are a disaster waiting to happen. This is a picture of persons given to self-indulgent habits that cut short their lives in time and send their careless souls to eternal perdition.
In our passage, a wise mother counselled her son against two everyday indulgent acts of sinful people: wine and women. Judges who get drunk are prone to making bad judgments. Drunken people casually gamble away their life savings. By the time they recover from their drunken stupor, they have lost everything and exposed themselves to avoidable poverty.
Many people have lost their lives or caused the death of others through drunk driving or the influence of hard drugs. In the same vein, men and women who defile themselves through sexual immorality debase their bodies, defame themselves before society, and damn their souls before God.
Grief, disappointment, poverty, or discouragement cannot justify or excuse sinful indulgence. You should recognise that your body does not belong to you but to God and that you will account for how you used or abused His precious gift that should glorify Him. The solution is to repent and turn away completely from all evil conduct. You should also present yourself as a living sacrifice to God and live to please Him in transparent holiness.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Winning over self-indulgence is the most fundamental victory.

GO STAND IN THE GAP
MEMORY VERSE: “And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none” (Ezekiel 22:30).
TEXT: EZEKIEL 22:23-31
Hudson Taylor grew up in a Christian home but when at age 15 he worked in a bank, his skeptical fellow clerks mocked his religion as ‘old fashion’. His Christian joy crashed and he began to desire worldly vanity. His younger sister Amelia began to pray three times daily for his restoration. His mother was also crying to God for him until she was tired one afternoon following hours of intercession. She heard an inner spirit witness that her prayer was answered. That same afternoon Hudson was about seventy miles away searching for a book to read. He got a pamphlet entitled, “The finished work of Christ.” He prayed for salvation and later became a successful missionary in China.
In Ezekiel’s days, there was rebellion, violation of God’s law, profanity, oppression, violence, blood shedding, and idolatrous practices in the nation of Israel. God was searching for someone to stand like Moses to call out for urgent decision before the wrath of God fell on them. God is also seeking intercessors for our nation today. Will you go?
QUOTE: God is also seeking intercessors
PRAYER: Oh Lord, help me to stand in the gap for sinners.
CHALLENGE: Don’t delay to stand in the gap for backsliders,
